A How-To on Staying Motivated and Achieving Your Goals

Achieving your goals takes time and dedication and very often, most give up on their dreams before they’ve even taken the first step. The relatively easy part is discovering what your goal is, whether it be a quirky new business idea or having a chiseled body with abs that could kill, but without a structured plan and vision, your goal is seldom easy or achievable.

But it’s so hard to stay motivated and on track isn’t it? I’ve been there. I’ve had numerous great business ideas spring to mind and I get all pumped up, buy a new notepad, do intensive research on the topic for days, I even gush about it to my family and close friends… and then the months pass by and I haven’t progressed with it at all. It’s a similar euphoria to a sugar rush. You consume the candy, get excited and high for a while, and then soon deflate back into your normal, meditative state.

In a world with more distractions than ever before, it can be harder to stay productive and focused. If you’re looking for ways to help yourself achieve your goals, here are 5 top tips that should help.

1. Visualize your results
Goal visualization is key and increases the likelihood of you actually reaching your goals and dreams. By having the ability to visualize your goals, you teache your brain to recognize what resources it will need to help you succeed in reaching your goals. According to an article featured on Forbes, It’s important to visualize the end result and how it will feel once you’ve achieved the goal. Visualize the feeling of relief, happiness, and the luxury of being able to sit back and relax knowing that you’ve made an accomplishment. This feeling of bliss will drive and motivate you on the days that you don’t feel like working.

2. Be organized

De-clutter your desktop and notepad and get organized. Take the time to sit down and arrange your thoughts. Start the week by writing tasks that you need to achieve by a certain date, buy a calendar or diary and use it to schedule specific times to complete each task. This is key to moving forward and getting what you want. Achieving a goal requires following steps and patience. You can create a list of things that you do need to do, prioritizing the most important tasks first and then working your way down the list.

3. Be consistent

We’re all human and have days where we don’t feel like doing anything, whether it be due to tiredness, illness or having a lack of time – but, it’s so important to take consistent action towards your goal every single day, whether it be little or large step. Even if you’re not totally in the mood, do one small productive thing that will move you forward. This will create healthy habits and keep you motivated and on track, and you’ll thank yourself later.

4. Don’t assume money will motivate you

Motivational trainer, Karen Strunks say "Many people think money alone will be enough to motivate them, and whilst that may do so initially, it's very hard to sustain financial motivation if the work you are doing actually drags”. You need to find a goal that aligns with who you truly are and what you want in life. Do something that inspires and motivates you, not something that you think you should be doing or what’s on trend. Finding something you truly love will be easier to achieve and will make you happier.

5. Don’t worry what you can’t control

If you worry too much about the uncontrollable elements of your goal, you may find yourself paralyzed in doubt and worry and stalling the process of moving forward. In a piece for The Huffington Post, life coach Stacia Pierce said to "take control of what you can, and don’t worry about what you can’t”. This goes for everything in life – nothing is wholly under your control. Just focus on making the things that you can control quality work.
